President's Message

Can you believe it, it's spring already.  Finished up the winter with lots of rain; think we'll have drinking water this year.  Yea!
Seems like there is dry rot everywhere.  The steps and landing came down; the more we demolished, the more dry rot appeared.  Not sure when we'll have the steps and landing back but, when we do, the stairs leading down to the courts are rotten too. Will it ever end?
Since so much decking had to be removed, I've decided to replace all the decking with new.  It will be a nice improvement but the going will be slow.  Sure appreciate your understanding.
Sorry for the jerking around with the Pickle Ball nets.  New permanent nets and posts were installed but the installation was unsatisfactory.  I called the contractor back and it looks like the new job is up to standards.  Time to resume your game in prime fashion.
Flowers are not the only thing blossoming in spring:  Look for spring tennis leagues, swim lessons, tennis lessons, fitness programs, socials and more - we're blooming, too.
I organize the senior men, aged 60 or older.  Come join us on Monday and Thursday afternoons.  You are also welcome to join the Senior Men's Team; we travel a bit, play on Wednesday afternoons and have a great time.  Bob Sweetman, our super senior who turns 90 this June, plays regularly.  Watch out for Bob, he has some very lethal drop shots.  In all, I have 34 players on my list.  It's fun, be sure to join us.
We're looking for more members and willing to pay you for your assistance:  $100.00 for sponsoring a new Fitness Membership, $200.00 for sponsoring a new Tennis Membership.  We've experienced a wave of members moving out of the area, a bit uncommon but not surprising.  As the membership ages, downsizing makes a lot of sense.
Be sure to register your sponsored member beforehand; no sponsoring fee paid if a written sponsorship isn't received prior to their joining.  No exceptions.
Cordially,

Dear Members,
Are you ready to be more confident, increase your energy levels and be more successful at managing stress? These goals can be achieved easier than you think, and good posture is one of the tools to get back on track! I am thrilled to announce that due to the multiple requests, the ‘’Transformational Posture’’ workshop is back in the month of March! By attending this workshop you will feel better, have more confidence in yourself and, as a result, will appear differently to others! You will gain more knowledge and awareness, which are the first steps toward a better posture!

Good Posture is the key to the following:

1. Work Out: Better posture improves breathing capacity and oxygen flow so you won’t get quite so winded during your workouts.

2. Lose Weight: When you slouch or slump, you appear shorter and you push your belly outwards, making it appear several inches wider than it actually is. When you stand with good posture, you stand tall with your shoulders back and you engage the deep abdominal muscles, which whittles the waist.

3.Look Younger: Improving posture will add a lot to your youthful appearance.

4. Save Money: If you struggle with neck, shoulder, back or knee pain, you likely spend a lot of money trying to find solutions or cures for the problem(s). What you might not know is that good posture can eliminate most of the pain in those areas, saving you time and money on doctor’s visits and painkillers.

Group Fitness

Dear Members,

Whether you're new to salsa dancing or have experience, come learn the original on Saturday, April 14th from 1 to 3 PM with Michelle Morales! Michelle will teach you everything you need to know to get started having fun and dancing at any Latin Dance Club or salsa event locally, or anywhere in the world! Once you learn the basics, there will be no stopping you! It's been proven beyond doubt: salsa dancing is one of the happiest ways to meet people, spend a night out on the town or even throw a party with friends. Salsa is known for its high energy, hot and even sexy moves, but it doesn't stop there. It's also energetic, rhythmic and an ever-growing, equal-opportunity, worldwide movement and phenomenon that never gets old, never discriminates and never goes out of style!

Two hours of intensive training will cover some of the fundamentals of salsa dancing, including the basics steps, turns and cross-body leads. No partner necessary, it doesn’t matter if you come on your own or as a couple. Please, sign up at the front desk. Space is limited.

On a different note, Ron San Miguel our Sunday Tai Chi instructor announced that he discontinues his Tai Chi classes as of the end of March, 2018. ‘’Thank you, it has been a good run.  The students have been great--they are the reason I have stayed at OHTC this long...’’ We would like to thank Ron for his wonderful services at OHTC and his contribution to the success of our group fitness programs.

Yulia

34 Reasons to Play Tennis!

We’ve all heard tennis referred to as the "sport for a lifetime." But, is this really true? According to world-renowned scientists from a variety of disciplines, there is no doubt that tennis can improve your overall health, including your mental and physical fitness.  Click the link to find out 34 reasons to play tennis.

Numerous benefits make tennis the ideal sport for kids to learn early in life. What parent wouldn’t want their children to have these advantages through their growing years?
And, it’s never too late for adults of all ages to take up the game. The human system can be trained and improved at any stage of life. The key is to start playing now to get the most out of these benefits throughout your lifetime.

A Few Ways to Get in the Game at OHTC

●Adult Beginner Classes:  Tuesday 9am or Thursday 7pm

Perfect for adults learning the game for the first time or as a refresher course for those players returning to tennis after a long absence. Learn the basics - forehands, backhands, serves and volleys. Students will also learn to rally and keep score. Students may only join the class at the beginning of the month.

●Jr. HITS - A Quick Start Class:  Mondays 3:30 or Saturdays 1pm

This 4-week class covers all the basic swing paths - groundstrokes, volleys and serves. Upon completion of the H.I.T.S - Quick Start Class students may be eligible to join the Junior After School clinics.

●Cardio Tennis - Heart Pumping Fitness for Everyone!

This is a high energy fitness activity that combines the best features of the sport of tennis with cardiovascular exercise, delivering the ultimate, full body, calorie burning aerobic workout.  It is a very social and fun class for players of all ability levels. If you've never played tennis before it is a great way to be introduced to the sport and if you are an experienced high level tennis player it is the best way to train for tennis.

●Summer Camps.  Keeping the kids busy and healthy!

Coach Josh and I will be running 9 weeks (June 11 thru August 10) of affordable and convenient summer camps at OHTC. Early Bird registration is now open!  NOTE:  OHTC Members use promo code OHTC50 for member pricing. All promo codes MUST be applied at the time of registration.  Enrolling more than one child?  Enrolling for multiple weeks? Please contact Josh Bernstein (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

●Live Ball!  Contact Josh (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) for current days and times.

A fast paced, fun, competitive and amazing doubles training!  LiveBall has been described as a "continuous doubles point" Geared towards improving your reflexes, instincts and movement on the court. LiveBall moves fast and challenges you to focus on game strategy, movement and working with a new partner in almost every game. You'll hit tons of volleys, overheads and passing shots as well!

Pickleball
Mariam Garfinkel, Director

Now that it’s March, we’re starting to gear up for more Pickleball.  The permanent nets are in and what a difference they make!  No more chasing flying nets down the court, propping them up, or dealing with broken poles and tears.

I am starting to host Thursday morning drop-ins from 9:30 – 11 am and providing beginner lessons at that time to anyone who’s ready to jump in and give it a try.
We have a growing list of folks who are active players. If you’d like to be added to it, please let me know. If you are a pickleball player and need players, let me know and I can send out a notice.

If you’re a member and willing to host a drop-in, your fellow / sister members would be very appreciative!  Hosting just means getting the balls and paddles from the office and returning them when the group is done.

A reminder that pickleball is included in your fitness memberships. It’s a fun way to supplement your other routines and a great workout!  Watch some folks new to the sport trying it out for the first time: https://youtu.be/6xvGp2Pk-78

Pickleball is not just for seniors! Young people love it and it’s spreading in schools and camps. Check out this video: https://youtu.be/XbOLYTAz5g4. There’s also a little tutorial on the basics about ¾ of the way through. And it’s a great way to spend family time.

And for you tennis folks out there, check out this video of Andy Roddick playing for the first time: https://youtu.be/y0kqk0ozaho.

Massage Messages

Dear Members

If you’re worried about what you may owe Uncle Sam, tax time can be partivularly stressing.  That’s why there’s no better time to treat yourself to  a relaxing spa treatment!Even if you’re lucky enough to be on the receiving end of a sizeable refund this year, well then, you may want to use some of that hard-earned cash to reward yourself!  Plus the timing couldn’t be better!  Only in the month of April, book either a 30 or 60 minute massage with Raphael Palermo on Thursdays from 10 to 2 or 3 to 7 and receive $10 off your unforgettable spa experience!

Some of Raphael’s most valuable training started when his mother, who is also a CMT and ran her own practice for more than 35 years, taught Raphael various techniques and skills when working with her and some of her clients.  The type of work Raphael most sought out for is deep tissue massage.  Here is what Raphael says about himself: “I also have no ego or need to give you the massage I think you need, so tell me what you like or want.  Thank you for taking the time to ge to know a little about me.  I will happ8ily show you what my hands and elbows can do.”
